Nigeria Faces Public Sector Strike Action
Organised labour in Nigeria have announced plans to strike in order to put pressure on the government to implement adjustment arising from the new National Minimum Wage.
Speaking on plans the Trade Union Side (TUS) Acting Chairman Mr Anchaver Simon stated, "As things are right now, the government side is only prepared to pay peanuts to workers as adjustment under the pretext that it will soon be undertaking general salary review in the Public Service."
After several meetings of the technical body tasked with determining wage levels the TUS claims that government representatives began to reposition the terms of reference so that only salary adjustments that were provided for in the 2019 budget could be secured. This meant that the body could not approve a rise beyond government-proposed levels.
"With this turn of event, it is quite clear now that some fifth columnists in this Administration are hell bent on pushing President Muhammadu Buhari to enter into a collision course with millions of Nigerian workers in the Public Service. This is very sad," a statement from the Union read.
As such eight trade unions in the public service have stated that if the federal government fails to address the matter action will be taken.
