West African Leagues Are Not Attractive – Nwabali
Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has opened up on why football leagues across West Africa continue to struggle to match the standards seen in other parts of the continent, particularly in countries like South Africa and Morocco.
Speaking in a recent interview, the Nigerian international pointed to deep-rooted structural problems that have limited the growth and appeal of leagues in the region.
According to him, one of the biggest challenges is the lack of financial stability, as many clubs are unable to offer competitive salaries to players.
This, he explained, naturally pushes talented footballers to explore opportunities abroad where better pay and career development prospects exist.
Nwabali also highlighted the issue of inadequate infrastructure, noting that many West African leagues still lag behind in terms of modern stadiums, training facilities, and overall organization.
In contrast, leagues in countries like South Africa and Morocco have made significant investments in upgrading their football systems, making them more attractive to both local and foreign players.
He stressed that without proper investment and long-term planning, it will be difficult for West African leagues to retain their top talents.
The goalkeeper added that improved sponsorship deals, better welfare packages, and stronger league management could help reverse the trend.
