Army kills 50 Boko Haram militants in Niger

Defence officials in Niger say government soldiers killed at least 50 Boko Haram militants during a clash on Sunday night.

According to the ministry of defence, the militants launched an assault against an army outpost at the south-eastern village of Toummour but were repelled by troops in a counter attack.

The soldiers then pushed the retreating Boko Haram fighters to the edge of Lake Chad, capturing several militants as well as commandeering vehicles and weapons.

One soldier was wounded.

The region has been the site of repeated attacks by Boko Haram over the past five years.
